Bettors who have not redeemed by this Thursday (Oct 10) will have to contact the police or consumer protection agency
The government Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will begin on Friday (October 11, 2024) to take down betting house websites, bets, which are irregular. According to the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddadabout 2,040 will fall. The Secretary of Prizes and Bets, Regis Dudena, recommends that bettors withdraw their money from these sites by this Thursday (Oct 10), otherwise they will have to contact consumer protection or public security agencies, such as the police.
The list of authorized bets is at this link. Any website that is not part of this list will be offline from Friday (Oct 11). There is no plan for withdrawing money from illegal sites when they are offline.
The Secretary of Prizes and Bets, Regis Dudena, declared that the deadline to withdraw funds ends this Thursday (10.Oct). “If you have funds on an unauthorized website, go there today and try to withdraw today”he said.
The secretary declared that it is the duty of companies that have money deposited to return the funds. And, if this is not the case, the amounts will be refunded, he stated: “It has two fronts. Consumer protection and police”.
2,040 OFF THE AIR
The president of Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency), Carlos Baigorri, said that he will notify the 21,000 telecommunications companies this Thursday (Oct 10). Some sites may remain online as a result of the decision, but will stop working soon.
“Throughout tomorrow we understand that this blockade will be implemented. As there are 21,000 telecommunications companies in Brazil, we have very large companies, such as Vivo, Claro and Tim, which have more robust structures and can quickly implement the blockade. But we also have very small companies in the interior of Brazil that often provide services in a municipality or neighborhood and can take longer to complete this blockade”he declared.
According to the president of Anatel, there is no estimate of how many sites will go offline among large telecommunications companies.
The Prizes and Betting Secretariat of the Ministry of Finance will be responsible for monitoring any websites that are created irregularly. The work will be shared with other bodies, such as the Ministry of Justice. The government will take down all these sites.
Dudena said that the expectation is for a “plumbing” for legality. “At some point, economic activity becomes unviable for the illegal. This is what we seek: to ensure that it is only viable to offer those who are regular in Brazil”, he declared.
ADVERTISING
Dudena said this Thursday (Oct 10) that regular bets will be able to advertise in Brazil. The betting houses that will be taken offline from this Friday (Oct 11) are prevented from doing so.
The executive secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Dario Durigan, said that irregular companies will not be able to create a website that no one knows about.
“Advertising is necessary. You need to make people aware of it. It is necessary to generate an appeal for the bettor to take the money [para o site]. Any new sites that begin to gain repercussion will certainly reach consumer protection agencies”, he declared.
COMPANIES THAT CAN OPERATE
Companies that are in “positive list” from the government can operate until the end of December this year. On January 1, 2025, only bets that will be authorized will operate. Bookmakers will still have to pay a grant of R$30 million to operate in Brazil.
Dudena declared that the positive list will serve as a kind of “trial period” and evaluation. “These companies that are operating are also being monitored and cannot violate laws in force in Brazil: Consumer Protection Code, Child and Adolescent Statute […] We will also be able to do a kind of fine-tooth comb”he declared.
The secretary declared that the Ministry of Finance currently knows who the partners and final beneficiaries of each company are. “We have a set of information from the positive list that is very relevant to us”, declared.
