Detroit.- In front of the largest crowd in their Playoff history, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-0 and took a 2-1 lead overall in this Major League Division Series.
The Tigers, who have not competed in the Playoffs since 2014, are just one win away from advancing to the American League Championship Series.
The 44,885 fans at Comerica Park in Detroit, their largest attendance for a Postseason game, thoroughly enjoyed a team that continues to break the odds. Detroit, sixth in the regular season in the American League, has already swept the favorite Houston Astros in the Wild Card Round.
And the Guardians, second seed in the Conference, were held scoreless this Wednesday for the second time in a row, after another 3-0 victory on Monday in Cleveland.
Facing veteran starter Alex Cobb, who had not pitched in the last month, the locals opened the scoring in the first inning with a run by Parker Meadows after a single by Riley Greene. Jake Rogers took advantage of Matt Vierling’s sacrifice fly to increase the lead in the third inning, after which Cleveland retired Cobb, whose injuries have allowed only four starts this season at age 37. Spencer Torkelson’s double to left field drove in Colt Keith’s final run in the sixth inning. The Tigers, who had tied the series on Monday thanks to a huge three-run homer by Kerry Carpenter in the final inning, will now have two chances to qualify for their first Championship Series since 2013.
