The 26-year-old Moroccan full-back, who joined the Red Devils this year from Bayern Munich in a deal initially valued at 15 million euros, underwent surgery after suffering from heart palpitations.
United said in a statement: “This is a relatively common condition and Nusair is expected to make a full recovery and be available to return to the squad within the next few weeks.”
Mazraoui was replaced a minute after the start of the second half of United’s match, which ended in a goalless draw with Aston Villa last weekend, and was replaced by Swedish defender Victor Lindelof.
Mazraoui played under the leadership of United’s current Dutch coach, Erik Ten Hag, at Ajax, for whom he played between 2017 and 2022. He won three league titles with the Dutch club and another with Bayern Munich, whose shirt he wore between 2022 and 2024.
He signed a four-year contract with the option to extend for another year, and his signing came on the day it was confirmed that full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka was leaving for West Ham United.
The right-back, who can also play as a left-back, participated in 29 matches with Morocco and reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
Mazraoui joined a long list of those absent from United’s 14th-placed defence, as Harry Maguire was also injured against Aston Villa, and he confirmed via social media that he would be out of action for several weeks.
