The rumors circulating in recent days regarding the possible increase in excise duties on diesel fuel have been confirmed by the Government chaired by Giorgia Meloni. In particular, it was the Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti who explained what Italians could face and the reasons why an increase in fuel taxation is taking place, as anticipated in the 2025 medium-term budget structural plan. 2029.
The Government’s move on excise duties
“As for diesel – Giorgetti explained during the House and Senate Budget Committees during a hearing – we wrote ‘alignment’, which is an obligation that comes from European commitments with respect to environmentally harmful subsidies. Alignment means that there will probably be a reduction in excise duties on petrol and an increase in those on diesel, trying to avoid repercussions for the categories that use diesel for professional purposes. This is an obligation that we must implement gradually.”
The increase in excise duties and the burden on families
The news of the increase in excise duties on diesel had also immediately alarmed consumer and trade associations who had underlined how taxation on diesel would have led to an increase in expenses for families: “The alignment of diesel/petrol excise duties (i.e. bringing the current excise duty on diesel from 0.617 to 0.728 euros) would have a disastrous effect on motorists and all citizens – Federconsumatori commented – According to estimates by the ONF – National Federconsumatori Observatory, in direct terms, each motorist would suffer an increase in diesel refueling of approximately +112.00 euros per year. But the most serious repercussions would be the indirect effects of this operation, since in Italy around 84% of goods are transported by road: the increase in the cost of diesel would produce a further burden on consumer goods equal to +121.00 euros per year per family (for all families, even those who do not own a car)”.
