Biologist Trofimova: food moths can detect the smell of spoiled cereal a kilometer away
The smell of spoiled cereal, imperceptible to the human nose, is picked up by food moths a kilometer away. What Attracts Pests NEWS.ru said Associate Professor of the Department of General Biology and Bioecology of the State University of Education, biologist Olga Trofimova.
The most delicious thing for lepidopterans is the aroma of rotting vegetables and fruits. In addition, food moths are attracted by the smell of rotten meat. Pests enter the apartment through all sorts of cracks, so when you decide to get rid of insects, you need to start by sealing any gaps and holes. The ventilation holes also need to be covered with a fine mesh. It is necessary to examine all stored products for the presence of larvae – first of all, this applies to dried fruits, cereals and tea, Trofimova draws attention.
Spoiled food must be disposed of quickly, because insect waste products remaining in food can cause poisoning. Other supplies and containers where they were stored should be washed with soda. Kitchen cabinet shelves should be wiped with a vinegar solution – the product should be mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio. In addition, products can be treated with ultraviolet light or placed in an oven preheated to 120 degrees for 15 minutes.
Another treatment option for stubborn pests is a day in the freezer. This will guarantee the extermination of moths, advises Trofimova. You can also use folk remedies for treatment – the strong smell of bay leaves, garlic and wormwood will drive away pests.
Cloves are effective in combating food moths. In addition, pheromone traps are commercially available. Adults flock to it, flock to it and stick to the adhesive tape.
