The US urges Israel to take “urgent” measures to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza
The United States representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, urged Israel this Wednesday to take “urgent” measures to alleviate the “worrying” humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, especially after the new evacuation orders for civilians. who reside in the northern area, which he has also criticized.
“The United States is concerned about the situation in northern Gaza, including Israel’s announcement of a new evacuation order for several communities. We are especially concerned that Palestinian civilians have nowhere safe to go (…) These catastrophic conditions were predicted months ago and yet they have not yet been addressed. That must change, and now. “We urge Israel to take urgent measures to do so,” he said during a session of the UN Security Council.
Following this, he referred to the 1.5 million Palestinians displaced in the center and south of the Strip, where humanitarian conditions are “miserable” and “catastrophic”, and he considered that they could worsen if measures are not taken to expand the flow of humanitarian aid to the enclave.
Likewise, he has expressed his desire that all residents of Gaza, including those recently displaced from the north, be allowed to return to their homes and “rebuild” them.
“We are also concerned about recent measures taken by the Israeli Government to limit the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. “If combined with the new bureaucratic limitations imposed on humanitarian aid from Jordan and the closure of most border crossings in recent weeks, these restrictions would only have the effect of intensifying the suffering in Gaza,” he added.
In this sense, he has highlighted the efforts of the UN Senior Coordinator of Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, in humanitarian work in coordination with other organizations and NGOs to carry out the polio vaccination campaign. (EP)
