More than thirty years without F1 in Africa
It was March 14, 1993 when Alain Prost won the first race of that season on the Kyalami track, in South Africain the same year in which the Frenchman would then win his fourth and final world title before retiring. Just over thirty years have passed since then, and Formula 1 has always remained distant from both South Africa and the rest of the continent.
The possibilities of rapprochement
Only recently have more concrete efforts been made to bring back the Circus in the only one of the five continents that has not hosted a GP from 1994 to today, also thanks to the continuous appeals of the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. In this regard, the latest statements that offer more hope for an effective return of F1 to Africa have come from the South African Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie.
Where to run?
According to the latter, in fact, “F1 will definitely come. F1 have said they are keen to come, they have told us what they will do and we will give them what they need to come.” The fact remains that, regardless of the return to South Africa, F1 may not return to the historic Kyalami circuit, but to one of the two tracks located in the country: “There is still a big fight right now – added McKenzie – will it be in Cape Town or Johannesburg?“
Meanwhile, Rwanda…
While waiting to understand all the developments on what will be the rapprochement of F1 in South Africa, at the same time the debut of another African country like Rwanda. Already in the summer break, the President of F1 Stefano Domenicali had expressed positive opinions on this country, as well as Hamilton, but not only: on the occasion of its 120th anniversary scheduled for 14 December, the International Federation will celebrate the greatest champions of its story with i FIA Awardswhich will be held in Rwanda.
