In Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii we will discover the true face of Goro Majimathe former “mad dog” of the Shimano family: the director of the series, Masayoshi Yokoyama, spoke about him during an interview published on the pages of the PlayStation Blog.
Goro”masks his feelings and hides his true self,” Yokoyama explained. “His past is mentioned throughout the series, yet the true Majima remains an enigma. He feels the need to reflect the image others have of him and skillfully behaves accordingly.”
“However, in this title the character suffers from amnesiaexposing his true self as the story unfolds.” So will we find out who the real Majima is? “You will understand who he is through his interactions with a child called Noah,” continued the director.
“It turns out he’s just a tough guy who really likes to fantasize. In Gaiden, while remembering his past, Majima looks at himself objectively and realizes who he is. This is a new narrative development.”
An atypical protagonist to say the least
“However, Majima is not the most conventional choice for a protagonist. His unpredictability, while not the norm, that’s what sets it apart and makes it intriguing. When a character like Majima becomes the protagonist, it creates a discrepancy between actions and emotions”, added Yokoyama, who in the same interview in which he revealed that the game was born as a spin-off with Kazuma Kiryu.
“It could happen that you feel frustrated during a scene, while Majima doesn’t seem affected and it could leave you confused. To avoid this we would have needed a neutral character who behaves as players expect from a protagonist, but the disadvantage is that then we would have ended up meeting up again a boring protagonist.”
“To make Kiryu and Kasuga protagonists we gave him additional personalities, but if we did the same with Majima he would become a boring guy. To make him a protagonist, therefore, we only had two options: amnesia or travel back in time. Without amnesia, Majima wouldn’t have worked.”
