Inflation in September, measured by the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), was 0.44%, almost half a point above the percentage recorded in August, when there was deflation of 0.02%. As a result, accumulated inflation in 2024 reaches 3.31% and, in 12 months, it reaches 4.42%.

The inflation diffusion index, the indicator that shows the percentage of products growing or falling, was 56% in September. This means that of the 500 items evaluated by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) to calculate the IPCA, more than half of them register a rise. If we only consider food products, the diffusion rate is 59%. Among Non-Food, it was 55%.

Foods lead high rankings
Food dominates the top of the list of items with the biggest increases this year. Tangerine (47.34%) and mango (40.91%) lead the ranking of increases in 2024. Coffee, which is on an upward trajectory, accumulates inflation of almost 25% in the year and olive oil of 20.63% .
Another product on the rise was ethanol, which is included in the Transport group, with a 16.23% increase this year, while gasoline had a 9.44% increase in the period.
On the other hand, the item with the biggest decline in prices in the year to date was airline tickets, -31.44%, followed by tomatoes (-31.34%) and carrots (-19.86%).
Electricity bill was the villain of September
What contributed most to the rise in the price index in September was residential electricity, which went from -2.77% in August to 5.36% in September, with the effect of the red tariff flag level 1, which adds R $4,463 for every 100kwh consumed.
The item electrical energy makes up the index for the Housing group, which increased by 1.80% in the month, accumulating 4.83% in the year. In October, the electricity bill will be even more expensive due to the triggering of the level 2 red flag.
