“But what is he doing there?” Hurricane Milton hits Florida with torrential rain, record winds and storm surges. While the population, often in the dark, tries to take shelter, there are journalists outside who report the storm minute by minute. There are those who resist with water up to their knees and those who risk getting a road sign in the face. American viewers do not miss the presence of Anderson CooperCNN’s flagship name, in Bradenton: on a pier, in the middle of a road transformed into a river, among trees that sway frighteningly.

The 57-year-old is deployed on the front line, to the amazement and protests of those who look on in astonishment. “He’s 57 years old, but why is he there?”, we read in one of the many posts on “Someone can get Anderson Cooper off that rail before he is dragged away by the water?”, the request of a worried viewer.

The clip that also documents an accident, apparently without serious consequences, bounces on X: Cooper, who tries to remain standing in the storm, is hit in the face by debris. “Wow, that’s not good,” says the journalist, who after a moment of confusion resumes working normally.

Cooper, of course, isn’t the only journalist spending the night abroad to cover the hurricane. All the major networks deploy their reporters to various locations in Florida. In Sarasota, where Hurricane Milton made landfall, NBC relies on Tom Llamas. The journalist is connected to the studio at 9.24pm on 9 October. Suddenly, however, he has to flee because the sea invades the streets: “We have to go”, he shouts before walking away.
