Southeast Asia is considered a major arena in the strategic competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China. But the US has recently lost influence in this area to its great power rival. As was the case last year, President Joe Biden will not attend the East Asia Summit, which takes place after the ASEAN Summit, where the heads of state and government of the ASEAN community of states met in Laos on Wednesday. Dialogue partners such as the USA, China, Japan, Australia and India also take part in the East Asia Summit. This contradicts the promise of Biden’s former boss, Barack Obama, who wanted to travel to the region every year as part of his “pivot” to Asia.
