A survey by the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM) showed that eight out of ten mayoral candidates who tried for re-election this year were successful. Of the 3,006 who sought a second term, 2,444 will be reappointed to the position. The number may increase, as there are still victories to be confirmed by the Electoral Court.
According to the survey, the percentage of people re-elected this year is 81%, while historically the rate is around 60%. In 2016, the height of the political crisis, the percentage was 46%, the only exception.
According to the CNM, 5,471 mayors were elected and 46 are still awaiting a court decision. Another 52 cities will have disputes in the second round, such as São Paulo, where the current mayor, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), is seeking re-election against federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL).
The PSD was the big winner of these elections, with 878 city halls won until Tuesday, 8 -51% of the disputes won. PP, União and MDB also stand out, with 50%, 46% and 45%, respectively.
The research also shows that progressive parties, such as PDT and PT, were unable to win many Executive seats. Ciro Gomes’ party won just one of four contests in 2024, while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s party won one in five.
PSOL is the only party with parliamentarians in the Chamber without a city hall. The situation could still change, as the party is in the second round in Petrópolis (RJ) and in the capital of São Paulo.
In places where there will be a second round, voters return to the polls to define their rulers on October 27th.
