TRE-RJ canceled the votes for 5th place in the dispute for not meeting deadlines; Léo Vieira (Republicans) will be the new mayor
THE TRE-RJ (Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro) decided on Tuesday (October 8, 2024) to cancel the candidate’s votes Professor Joziel (DC), 5th place in the dispute for the Mayor of São João de Meriti, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. The measure was published in an extra edition of the TRE-RJ Justice Gazette. With the decision, the first placed, Leo Vieira (Republicans) surpassed 50% of valid votes in the 1st round.
The decision that suspended the 2nd round in São João de Meriti was signed by judge Renata Travassos Medina de Macedo, from the 88th Electoral Zone. According to the TRE-RJ publication, Professor Joziel had his candidacy annulled for not meeting the legal deadline for changing the candidate for vice mayor, Felipe Juventude (DC), by September 17th.
Joziel’s vice candidate, Felipe Castro da Silva (DC), known as Felipe Juventude, had his registration rejected with the sentence becoming final and unappealable on September 11.
The decision was taken in response to the action filed by Léo Vieira’s coalition. Previously with 49.82% of the votes (122,399), Vieira would run in the 2nd round against Valdecy da Saúde (PL), which obtained 33.01% of the votes (81,102). However, with the annulment of the 2,624 votes received by the DC (Christian Democracy) candidate, Vieira began to lead with 50.91% of the valid votes, being declared the new mayor of the municipality.
