We are during a time in which Ubisoft is not going through the best moment of its existence, given that many of its star games have not sold well, they had to delay their trump card for 2025, as well as the rumors that Tencent I would be interested in buying the company. And if all this were not enough, a legal problem has recently been reported that could cause the French to lose income.
Ubisoft faces a class action lawsuit for allegedly sharing its users’ personal information with Goalthe parent company of Facebook. They mention that the complaint accuses the video game company of transmitting personal identification data (PII) of users who use the Store or subscribe to Ubisoft+ through tracking system Pixelwithout the proper consent of the users. The document notes that this practice exposes players’ personal information without prior warning, which could constitute a violation of various privacy laws.
The main law mentioned in the lawsuit is the Video Privacy Protection Act, originally created in 1988 to prevent rental stores from sharing their customers’ history. Although this law was modified in 2013 to allow digital companies, such as Netflixshared data with social networks, explicitly requires the user’s consent, something that, according to the complaint, the gaming company has not complied with. It is alleged that the company did not inform its users about the use of the Pixel and its connection with Meta, which allowed data to be shared for marketing purposes without the knowledge of the players.
The latter is a tracking tool used to collect information about users’ online activity, allowing companies to run more targeted advertising campaigns. However, the lawsuit alleges that its implementation on Ubisoft’s website was deliberate and carried out without first obtaining users’ permission, an action that the plaintiffs claim violates their right to privacy. The claim adds that Goal could not have placed this system without the direct cooperation of the creators of Assassin’s Creed.
Certification of the class action lawsuit is still awaited, but the plaintiffs are seeking financial compensation for all those affected. In addition, they demand a court order that requires Ubisoft to remove the tracking system from its website or, failing that, for the company to obtain explicit consent from players before sharing any personal information. The company has not issued a statement on the matter so far.
