The 2024 elections marked the year in which the most candidates who have some military rank or degree in their names were elected this century. In this year’s election alone, 152 candidates were elected with positions ranging from “general” to “square”, representing 0.24% of all mayors and councilors elected in the country. The data is from Nexus.
The number is 13% higher compared to those elected in 2020, with 134 candidates who declared themselves military and carried their ranks in the ballot names registered with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
From 2000 to this year, the number of military ranks in candidate names rose 36%. In the first election of the century – which took place precisely that year – 707 candidates presented themselves as military personnel, of which 112 were elected. In 2024, the total number of military personnel who ran for election was 1,204.
Meanwhile, the total number of candidates across the country rose 14% in the same period – from 399,330 in 2000 to 454,689 in 2024. The data shows that the growth rate of military candidates is five times greater than the total increase in candidates.
The PL, the party of former president and retired Army captain Jair Bolsonaro, elected a total of 52 military candidates in this year’s election, the largest number. It is followed by Republicans and MDB, with 18 and 16 candidates, respectively.
The Southeast had the highest number of military victories, with 54 elected. Next comes the South region, with 36, the Northeast, with 30, the Central-West, with 24 and the North, with 8 military candidates elected.
