Cuba’s communist regime made official this Monday (7) its request to join the Brics group of emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) as a partner country.
The information was confirmed by Carlos Pereira, director of the General Division of Bilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Cuban dictatorship, who stated that his country’s request was sent to the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin.
“Cuba officially requested its incorporation into the BRICS as a “Partner Country”, through a letter to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who holds the presidency of the group, which is consolidating itself as a key actor in global geopolitics and a hope for the Southern countries”, wrote Pereira in X.
Cuba’s request to become a BRICS partner was also confirmed by the Russian ambassador to Cuba, Viktor Koronelli. Koronelli told the Russian state news agency TASS that the Cuban dictator, Miguel Díaz-Canel, received an invitation to participate in the BRICS summit, which will take place in Kazan, Russia, between October 22nd and 24th.
Cuba’s request to join the BRICS signals an attempt by the Cuban regime to diversify its economic partnerships. According to information from the independent Cuban website Martisince last year, representatives from the communist island have participated in events related to the Brics, reinforcing the country’s interest in participating in the bloc. During an interview in May 2023, dictator Díaz-Canel declared that the Brics represent “an important alternative for economic and commercial integration”.
Ambassador Koronelli commented that Cuba could contribute to the BRICS with its “modest experiences and results” in several areas, such as the medical, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry, health, education and science. Cuba has sought to revitalize its economy, devastated by years of communism.
At the beginning of this year, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Iran joined the bloc as members. In addition to the Cuban regime, Nicaragua and Venezuela also showed interest in joining the bloc.
