Washington.- The United States today banned the entry into the country of the former president of Ecuador Rafael Correa as well as the former vice president of that country Jorge Glas for engaging in significant acts of corruption during their administrations, the State Department reported today.
Due to the sanctions imposed by the State Department, the former president of Ecuador between 2007 and 2017 and the former vice president between 2013 and 2017 will be unable to enter US territory in addition to also extending said sanction to his wife and adult children.
“Correa and Glas abused their positions as president and vice president of Ecuador, respectively, by accepting bribes, including through political contributions, in exchange for awarding favorable government contracts,” State Department Spokesperson Matt Miller said today. Until April of this year, Glas had received refuge inside the Mexican Embassy in Quito and the armed incursion into the premises led to the breakdown of relations between the two Governments; Glas is currently imprisoned in Ecuador accused of corruption.
“The US stands with Ecuadorians, including members of civil society, law enforcement and investigative journalists, committed to increasing government transparency and holding corrupt public officials accountable,” the State Department spokesperson said.
Relying on a provision of the 2024 Budget Act, the Biden Administration also banned Correa’s wife, Anne Malherbe Gosselin, his adult daughters, Sofia Correa and Anne Dominique Correa, and his adult son, Rafael, from entering its country. Miguel Correa, as well as Glas’ wife, Cinthia Díaz Aveiga, and his adult son, Jorge Glas Díaz.
