The future of Brazilian Lucas Paquetá as a professional footballer could become complicated in the coming days, amid an investigation that the Football Association (FA) is carrying out on him for possible match-fixing.

According to the English media Mail Sport, The FA calls for a lifetime ban for Paquetá, who is concentrated with his country’s national team for the qualifying games for the 2026 World Cup in North America, in which he will face Chile this Thursday and Peru next Tuesday.
Paquetá is being investigated because, apparently, he was intentionally cautioned in four matches for his team, West Ham: one against Leicester, in 2022, and three more in 2023, against Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth.
The investigations detected that at least 60 people bet on a yellow card for Paquetá in those four games, generating profits of more than 100 thousand pounds sterling, about 500 million pesos.
Most of those bets, which were between £7 and £400, came from Rio de Janeiro, Paquetá’s hometown and where he also began his professional career, at Flamengo.
The reason why Lucas Paquetá could be sanctioned for life
In the middle of that investigation, the FA asked Paquetá to hand over his cell phone. Then they returned it, but some time later they asked for it again. The aggravating factor was that the footballer said he had thrown the device in the trash.
Due to this, the FA filed a second complaint against him, now for obstruction of justice, and for this reason asked that he be banned for life.
The situation has already affected both the player and West Ham, who had arranged a transfer to Manchester City for 88 million euros, but had to undo the deal due to the investigation against the Brazilian.
