the body of young Francesco Capuzzo, who disappeared during an excursion, has been found: investigators will have to establish whether it was a suicide or an accidental fall
The research ends in the worst possible way Francesco Capuzzo. The 33-year-old from Basiglio, in the province of Milan, had disappeared since September 24th. His body was lifeless in an impervious area of the Saint-Marcel valley, about 25 kilometers from Aosta. The body lay at the bottom of a rock cliff, near the old abandoned mines, an isolated and difficult to reach area.
The turning point in the search came on 7 October when the police found his car at the picnic area of Les Druges, at around 1,600 meters above sea level. The vehicle, with the passenger compartment closed, was in a lonely area, not very busy at this time of year. From that moment, rescuers concentrated in the Saint-Marcel valley, using helicopters, dog units and specialized forces. The Alpine Rescue Service of the Guardia di Finanza of Cervinia and the Aosta Valley, together with the Fire Brigade and the Forestry Corps of the Aosta Valley coordinated the searches.
The car, probably left parked for days, was the first concrete lead after weeks of uncertainty. The first searches were concentrated about 40 kilometers away, in the area of Great Saint Bernard. The last telephone cell to which his cell phone had been connected on the day of his disappearance belonged to these places. This detail, misleading at first, could be explained by the poor telephone coverage in the higher villages of Les Druges.
Numerous questions still remain about what really happened to Francesco Capuzzo. The man had mentioned a possible “survival” style excursion. The investigators must clarify whether his death was the result of an accidental fall during the route or a voluntary act. The area where the body was found, with its isolated paths and overhanging rocks, was certainly not an easily accessible place.
According to initial reports, Capuzzo’s body may have remained there for several days before being found. The exact dynamics of the accident or its intentions will be clarified by the medico-legal examination that will be conducted in the next few hours. No one appears to have had contact with him before his disappearance, nor are there any known friends in the area. It is hypothesized that Capuzzo may have already explored that area of the Saint-Marcel valley in the past, fascinated by the ancient mines and the wild nature that surrounds that landscape.
For days, his disappearance had generated apprehension. The association Penelope Lombardywhich deals with missing people, had launched an appeal in the hope of finding him alive. The news of Francesco Capuzzo’s tragic end profoundly shook the community of Basiglio and that of Saint-Marcel.
