The October 10th is celebrated World Mental Health Day: an anniversary that embraces well-being at 360 degrees with the aim of increasing awareness of mental disorders, mobilizing efforts for adequate support for those affected, fighting stigma and discrimination. On the occasion of the day, promoted by the World Federation of Mental Health and supported byWorld Health Organization (WHO), the Italian Society of Neurology (Sin) wishes to draw attention to the importance of mental health and the urgent need to face the challenges it entails.
According to WHO data, approximately 1 in 4 people in the world will be affected by mental disorders in their lifetime. In Italy it is estimated that over 3 million people suffer from anxiety disorders, while around 2 million live with depression, so much so that, in the last 30 years, neurological disorders have been the main cause of disability and the second cause of death globally, with 9 million deaths per year. “Like Sin, we have always been close to patients and their caregivers – declares Alessandro Padovani, president of the Italian Society of Neurology – and, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, we reiterate the need for a renewed commitment to prevention and treatment of neurological and mental diseases. We must in fact combat these diseases which continue to increase, recording worrying numbers. Just to name a few: over 7 million people suffer from migraines, 12 million suffer from sleep disorders and over 2 million people are affected. from cognitive impairment or dementia”.
This year the The theme of the World Day is dedicated to mental health in the workplace. Sin, already involved in the brain health initiative, expresses its support for the national initiatives promoted by the Mental Health Roundtable, aware that mental health and brain health are closely associated and often recognize common biological mechanisms.
