Don’t call it the new Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. Because if it is true that it takes up its legacy and in some respects also recalls it, the new SUV presented as a world premiere by the German company has a very specific name: Tayron. In the Volkswagen range it is positioned between the Touareg and Tiguan, so we can say that it is placed in the medium-high range. It is a model designed for Europe and which is precisely why it was born in Europe, to be precise in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen’s headquarters. This is a very versatile SUV, to choose with five or seven seatsand which we had the chance to discover in preview a few weeks ago in Hanover and the surrounding area. Let’s find out how it’s done.
The new Volkswagen Tayron
Starting from his dimensions: the new Tayron is 4,770 mm long, 1,660 mm high and 1,852 mm wide (excluding external mirrors), boasts wheels up to 20″ and has a wheelbase of 2,791 mm, specifications that allow it to position itself as the company’s second-largest SUV German automobile in Europe. The design of the new Volkswagen SUV is rather incisive especially at the frontin which we find the bumpers with a personalized aesthetic and above all the HD Matrix IQ.LIGHT headlights. Then, the roof area is elongated, while the lateral body of the bodywork asserts itself like the entire rear section characterized by a bright design.
Incisive exteriors, tech and spacious interiors
Elegance and spaciousness These are the two strong points of the Volkswagen Tayron interior. The quality of the materials used by the German brand is high, thus creating a perfect combination with the very high technological standards available. In particular, the dashboard of the new SUV is characterized by a continuous horizontal architecture: on the first level there is the Digital Cockpit Pro, digital instruments with a display diagonal of 10.25″; the visually separate 12.9″ touch-screen of the infotainment system is located in the center; finally, in a third and final level, there are illuminated touch sliders for adjusting the temperature and audio volume, with the latter which can be adjusted, alternatively, via the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel, the IDA voice assistant or the rotor for the driving experience between the driver’s seat and the passenger seat.
Extremely spacious trunk
Separate mention for the rotor for multifunctional driving experiencewhich is always standard on the Tayron and which, in addition to the audio volume, allows you to manage the various modes, all-wheel drive (the latter depending on the engine version) and the pre-configured Atmospheres. Comfort chapter: in the Elegance and R-Line equipment versions the new Tayron is equipped with a particularly ergonomic ergoActive seat on the driver’s side, while with the Varenna leather interior on request it is also possible to integrate the ergoActive Plus seats with specific massage and climate control functions for the driver and front passenger. We remind you that this SUV was configured with seven seats, even if not combined with the plug-in hybrid drive, which leads us to evaluate different levels of boot loading volume: 345 liters in the seven-seater version, up to 885 liters in the five-seater version and over 2,000 liters in the five-seater version with the second row folded down.
Three trim levels, seven engines
The range of fittings is made up of three levels: starting from Lifeyou go up with the Elegance and we get to the R-Line. The engine offering, however, is much more complex and consists of seven different engines. Two of these are plug-in hybrids and guarantee an overall range of up to 850 km: they combine a four-cylinder turbo engine and an electric motor which in the basic version develops a system power of 150 kW (204 HP), and which in the top of the range version becomes 200 kW ( 272 HP). Everything is powered by a 19.7 kWh battery, which guarantees a maximum electric range of over 100 km: this unit can be recharged at the AC charging box, at AC charging stations up to 11 kW and at charging stations fast DC up to 50 kW.
Plug-in hybrid, mild-hybrid and ICE
From plug-in hybrid to mild hybrid. Because the new Tayron is also available with a 110 kW (150 HP) eTSI engine with 48 V belt-driven alternator-starter and ACTplus cylinder deactivation: in this case, during braking the kinetic energy is recovered via an alternator and accumulated in a separate 48V battery, which can then be used to switch off the hi-tech petrol turbo during deceleration and downhill.
The engines complete the line-up turbo petrol TSI evo4 and turbo diesel TDI evo2: we are talking about latest generation supercharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, in two power levels each. For the record: the two pure turbo petrol engines and the more powerful turbodiesel engine are combined with all-wheel drive 4MOTION (in this case a device is available towing for a towable mass of up to 2,500 kg), while all other versions are front-wheel drive. In conclusion, in all versions of the Tayron, gear engagement is entrusted to the DSG automatic dual clutch gearbox.
Prices and market launch
In short, an imposing SUV that will certainly have its say on the market because its winning recipe, Piotr Mitka, Product Marketing Tayron told us, is to combine “prestige and functionality“. To date, the price list remains unknown: we know that the launch of the new Volkswagen Tayron on the German and European markets is scheduled for March of next yearwith prices which, at least in the homeland, should be around 45,900 euros.
