“Investing in health policy in the child’s early years leads to an improvement in life in subsequent years. Those who eat well from an early age, even at school, will not suffer from diabetes, will not have metabolic syndrome, i.e. hypertension, fatty liver, will never become obese. The diet must be considered in all respects a therapy, which is the absolute prerogative of the pediatrician.” This was said by Gianluigi Marseglia, director of the Pediatric Clinic of the University of Pavia, Fondazione Irccs Policlinico San Matteo, and director of the School of Specialization in Paediatrics of the University of Pavia, as well as president of the National College of Directors of the Schools of Paediatrics, speaking this morning in the Senate on the occasion of the press conference ‘From regional good practices to national guidelines on feeding children in nursery schools’, promoted by the vice president of the Senate Gian Marco Centinaio.
Marseglia recalled that Italy is “the third country in Europe for the number of overweight or obese children. For this reason, the over 4,000 young pediatricians who are training in specialization schools are oriented towards transversal nutrition during the developmental age. And this is because nutrition is a cultural heritage therapy of the pediatrician”. Then, “obviously, the objective from a nutritional point of view is to create a common network. It is not possible for there to be managerial differentiations in school catering between different regions”, he concludes.
