Doctor Pavlova: thorough chewing of food is not a provocateur of dementia
Endocrinologist, MD Zukhra Pavlova said that, despite a recent study by scientists from the Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in South Korea, which showed that men who chew their food thoroughly were more likely to be diagnosed with dementia, in reality this habit is not a provocateur of the disease. This myth is a doctor dispelled in your Telegram channel.
As Pavlova said, scientists studied the eating habits of more than five thousand men and women over 60 years of age and came to the conclusion that men who made at least 30 chewing movements per bite had decreased cognitive function, and they were diagnosed with dementia in almost three times more often than those who chew food less thoroughly. However, a similar relationship has not been established in women, the endocrinologist added.
“Men who chew their food thoroughly are more susceptible to dementia,” such headlines appeared in the news feed, and many probably thought that to prevent dementia they should do less chewing movements, and it would be better to swallow whole. This is wrong!” – the doctor assured.

According to Pavlova, the results obtained by Korean scientists are explained by the fact that by chewing food more thoroughly, the body tries to stimulate fading brain functions when dementia has already begun, but has not yet been diagnosed. The endocrinologist added that when chewing food thoroughly, nutrients from food are better absorbed, blood circulation in the brain increases, and the volume of oxygen supplied increases.
“That is, men, through chewing, seem to ‘massage’ the fading brain, trying to activate it,” Pavlova clarified.
An unobvious cause of dementia was previously identified. Scientists have found that people who fall frequently are more likely than others to be diagnosed with dementia.
