An entirely Colombian success
The success of David Alonso in the last Japanese Grand Prix it was fundamental for the young rider of the Aspar team not only for having come close to the record of overall seasonal victories in this category (including the 125cc), but also and above all for having conquered the title of world champion. In the history of the MotoGP, no Colombian rider had ever managed to reach such a goal before him, but the 18-year-old still joins a small circle of South Americans who have instead succeeded in this undertaking, regardless of the category.
The Venezuelan World Cup
In fact, if you look at the history of the MotoGP, only two pilots Latin Americans managed to enter the roll of honor, and both curiously of Venezuelan nationality. The first climb to the roof of the world was Johnny Cecotto in 1973the year in which he won the 350 class. Furthermore, his was a very particular career: winner of three 500 races in the 1970s and 3rd in the 1978 season, which coincides with the highest placing for a driver Latin American in the premier class, Cecotto moved to Formula 1 in the first half of the decade. In that same period, this time in the 250 class, Carlos Lavado he carried the colors of the Venezuelan flag high a second time, and on two different occasions. In addition to winning the title in 1983Lavado replicated the success in 1986. He did not achieve the same fortunes in the 350 class, although he became a true national idol by winning the 1979 Venezuelan GP, as well as establishing himself in 1982 in Argentina.
The other victories
Argentina which at the same time can boast two race winners in the history of the MotoGP. The first was Benedicto Caldarellawho in addition to achieving two podiums in 500, won his home GP in the same category in 1962. His compatriot never managed to reach the MotoGP Sebastian Portowho nevertheless achieved good results between 1995 and 2006 in 250, becoming vice-champion in 2005 and with a total of 7 career victories. The longest career was, finally, that of Alex Barros: author of 245 GP. The Brazilian also won seven races before a brief stint in Superbike.
