Game director Masayoshi Yokoyama revealed in an interview that Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii was originally intended as a spin-off starring Kazuma Kiryu entitled Like a Dragon: Tuna, in which the former Dragon of Dojima would have played the role of a tuna fisherman.
“For quite some time I wanted to make a game called Like a Dragon: Tunain which Kazuma Kiryu, as a tuna fisherman, goes out to sea to fight against other fishing boats,” Yokoyama explained.
The project did not materialize, but “key words like ‘ship’, ‘sea’ and ‘fight’, which from that moment on were engraved in my mind, they evolved into the concept of pirates“, continued the Japanese game director.
Spin-offs dedicated to different characters
As we know, the series developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio opted a few years ago for a change of protagonist, setting and gameplayas we told you in the review of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, but leaving the door open to spin-offs.
“Since the protagonists change in the spin-off, you can follow the same story from a different perspective,” Yokoyama said. “Plus the spin-offs are the perfect size for adults.” At the end of the day “lhe Like a Dragon series is like an all-you-can-eat restaurant.”
This means you can sit at a table and “choose meat, fish or whatever you want and eat as much as you want. However, as you mature you start to prefer well-balanced and well-proportioned meals. Spin-offs are like that.”
