The UAE, represented by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, participated in the energy ministers’ meeting at the G20 Summit in 2024, which was held in the Republic of Brazil, with the aim of enhancing joint cooperation between member states in supporting future directions of the energy sector and climate action, and discussing opportunities and challenges.
The UAE delegation was headed by His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, who affirmed the UAE’s commitment to achieving a fair and orderly energy transition, in line with the historic “UAE Agreement” that puts the world on the right climate action path, and constitutes an exceptional turning point in The path to this global goal.
Scientists also participated in the ministerial meeting of the Clean Energy Conference and the “Mission of Innovation” initiative, stressing the role of innovation, technology and cooperation in accelerating the transformation of the energy sector, which contributes to achieving global climate goals, calling for the implementation of the commitments stipulated in the “Historic UAE Agreement.” The objectives of the seventh goal of the Sustainable Development Goals are “Ensuring access to clean and affordable energy.”
His Excellency participated in a ministerial session on future fuels, which was held on the sidelines of the 2024 G20 meetings, during which he reviewed the country’s efforts in transforming the energy sector and the goals of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050.
His Excellency the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure chaired the third ministerial meeting of the World Hydrogen Trade Forum, with the participation of Their Excellencies ministers and officials of the countries supporting the forum, and representatives of hydrogen importing and exporting countries. The discussions dealt with developing global and cross-border trade in hydrogen and its derivatives, and discussed many important topics related to The hydrogen market and the best ways to enhance global trade in this vital resource in confronting environmental challenges and achieving sustainability.
His Excellency also participated in two high-level sessions, the first on marine energy centers entitled “Energy Centers: Transporting the Fuel of the Future, Are Production and Transport Aligned,” while the second session touched on innovative, highly efficient cooling technologies. He also participated in the G20 ministerial meeting, which discussed the transformation in the energy sector.
His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama explained that these meetings are an ideal opportunity to exchange experiences and strengthen partnerships between countries and companies working in this vital sector, and that the UAE’s effective participation comes as part of its strategy to strengthen its position as a major player in the global energy market, especially hydrogen, and to support global sustainability efforts, explaining The role of these international meetings in unifying visions and goals and enhancing strategic cooperation during the coming years regarding the energy transition.
He stressed that the UAE attaches great importance to international cooperation in the field of energy, and always seeks to enhance efforts to transition to more sustainable and cleaner energy sources, and that its participation in this meeting comes within the framework of its commitment to supporting innovation and adopting modern technologies to achieve a more sustainable energy future in the world, indicating the necessity of Achieving a balance between meeting economic development needs and environmental obligations, ensuring a more prosperous and just future for all countries.
He added: “We are confident that the UAE’s cooperation with the members of the group will contribute to achieving the international goals of sustainable development, enhance global efforts to combat climate change, and support the country’s efforts to be at the forefront of countries leading international efforts to shift towards clean and sustainable energy, in line with With our energy strategies 2050, the strategic initiative for climate neutrality 2050, and the goals of the “We are the Emirates” vision.
He said that at the national level, the UAE has achieved distinguished achievements in the field of transformation in the energy sector, as it has adopted a long-term strategy aimed at achieving a balance between meeting the needs of economic growth and preserving the environment, as it has invested more than 160 billion dirhams in clean and renewable energy, while we plan to invest Another 500 billion dirhams in the energy sector over the next thirty years to achieve climate neutrality.
He pointed out that the production of renewable energy reached 6 gigawatts, and 5.6 gigawatts of nuclear energy, while we aim to raise the total installed capacity of clean energy to 19.8 gigawatts by 2030.
His Excellency pointed to the importance of hydrogen as a source of clean and sustainable energy and the role that the UAE can play in this field at the global level. He also touched on the country’s pioneering projects in the field of developing hydrogen technologies, and its commitment to supporting innovation and international cooperation to enhance the effective use of hydrogen.
He stressed the UAE’s efforts to enhance the position of hydrogen within the energy mix, and to this end, it launched the National Hydrogen Strategy – 2050.
