Finnish will participate in NATO’s so-called peacetime missions next year with two ships of the navy and a flight section of up to five fighters of the air force, the Ministry of Defense says.
Merivoimat participates in the tasks of NATO’s permanent naval force department and mine countermeasures department in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the North Atlantic.
Ilmavoimat participates in NATO’s air defense so-called Air policing missions in Iceland, the North-East Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean.
The State Council is to give a report on Finland’s participation in NATO’s peacetime joint defense tasks to the parliament during October.
“By actively participating in NATO’s peacetime joint defense tasks, we communicate the alliance’s unity and demonstrate our readiness and defense capability. Participation is one of the ways in which Finland supports the alliance’s actions to strengthen the security environment”, the Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen (kok) says in the announcement.
Today In 2008, Finland participated in NATO’s air defense missions from Romania with eight fighters.
In addition, Finland participated in the operations of NATO’s permanent mine countermeasures division in the Baltic Sea with one Katanpää-class ship.
