Over half of Finns are worried about the costs caused by the liberalization of alcohol sales. This is clear from a survey conducted by E2 Research in February 2024, which examined Finns’ views on alcohol and decision-making regarding it.
A clear majority of the respondents, or about three quarters, also saw that decision makers should not make decisions that increase alcohol consumption.
“Based on the results of the study, Finns have reservations about expanding the sale of alcohol. The majority of Finns also felt that the alcohol sales system in effect at the time of the survey in February was functional,” says the director of E2 Research Jenni Simonen.
Research was made before the new alcohol law that entered into force in June, which liberalized the sale of alcohol in Finland. The government the new alcohol law brought in June, no more than eight percent fermented alcoholic beverages in grocery stores.
The government is also planning to allow home deliveries of alcohol next year. In addition, it has been entered into the government program statement release of up to 15 percent of wine sales from Alko’s monopoly. The report is scheduled to be completed by the spring 2025 midterm.
Women’s according to the study, the attitude towards alcohol policy is stricter than that of men. 68 percent of women think that the expansion of alcohol sales is planned too much on the terms of adults, while 41 percent of men think so. In addition, women are clearly less likely than men to think that buying alcohol has been made too difficult in Finland.
“The background is certainly that women generally experience more adverse effects of alcohol in their close circle than men. Women also work more often than men in fields where they face the adverse effects of alcohol. Such are, for example, the care and social security sector,” says Simonen.
2,040 Finns responded to the survey. E2 Research is a multidisciplinary independent research institute.
