Weather|By Wednesday evening, 20–30 millimeters of rain can accumulate. In northern Finland, the rain is sleet or snow.
Fall storm reached the southwestern sea areas of Finland already early Wednesday morning and is moving towards the interior.
“Its leading edge is currently over Hankoniemi”, says Foreca’s meteorologist on duty Ilkka Alanko a little after six in the morning.
During the morning, the heavy rain area and the winds with it will move to Varsinais-Suomi and Uusimaa. The heavy rain starts in the capital region, on the Helsinki–Tampere–Pori line, by eight in the morning, Alanko says.
By Wednesday evening, 20–30 millimeters of rain can accumulate. According to Alanko, the rainfall area seems to be fairly uniform.
“When you start to port, you will only get up during the night from lunch.”
The rain area will move east and north during the day, and next night the rains will focus on eastern and northern Finland. It has already snowed a little in Lapland, but along with the actual rain area, sleet or snow is falling north of Kainuu.
“Next night in Lapland we can talk about snowballs.”
Snow can accumulate between 5 and 10 centimeters, and winds can blow it away.
Strong the wind moves together with the rain area. On Wednesday morning, Gusts on the south coast have been strong at 15 meters per second. In the afternoon, the gusty wind near the south coast may intensify further.
According to Alango, wind gusts inland are 15–18 meters per second. Gusty wind can cause damage.
At least leaves are flying briskly, but trees may also fall or branches may be torn off. When fallen leaves accumulate on manhole covers and drain grates, it can cause small floods.
On Thursday morning, the autumn storm is still raging in northern Finland, but in the rest of the country the storm will be over by morning.
However, new rains and winds are expected on Thursday. It will also rain in Lapland on Thursday.
Foreca estimates on Tuesday evening, that during Wednesday and Thursday in the south it can rain up to 60 millimeters of water in some places. More rain and wind can also be expected on Friday, when the remnants of Hurricane Kirk arrive in Finland, Foreca estimates.
