Only one candidate for mayor or councilor, of the 10 who most financed their own campaigns, managed to be elected in this first round: Miguel Vaz (Republicans) was elected in Lucas do Rio Verde (MT). All in all, candidates donated more than R$300 million to their own campaigns, according to information from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
Vaz invested R$340,000 of his own in his candidacy and obtained 25,076 votes (74.96%), which is equivalent to an investment of R$13 per vote.
On the other hand, Du (Avante), who ran for mayor of Vitória (ES), was the candidate who invested the most in himself and was not elected – he came in second to last place. Du invested R$744,800 in his campaign, but only received 786 votes (0.42%). His expenditure was R$943 per vote, around 70 times greater than that of Miguel Vaz.
Other self-financed candidates had low votes, such as Wellington do Curso (Novo), who ran for mayor of São Luís (MA), invested R$ 359.4 thousand and won 4,409 votes (0.77%), an average of R$ 81 per vote. In Joinville (SC), Rodrigo Meyer (PSB) allocated R$330,000 in the dispute for the position of mayor and won 2,946 votes (0.95%), spending R$112 per vote.
Other candidates who invested in their own campaign went to the second round, such as Alcides Ribeiro Filho (PL), who will run for the Executive of Aparecida de Goiânia (GO) against Leandro Vilela (MDB). Professor Alcides, as he is known, invested R$534.5 and obtained 98.4 thousand votes – an average of just over R$5 per vote.
