The most private thing that German homeowners seem to have, the boiler room, has become a little quieter in recent months. There are now videos on YouTube in which nerdy technology freaks report on the first heating period of their self-installed heat pump and hold temperature curves in front of the camera. There hasn’t been any mention of the “heating hammer” for a long time. But German cities are still working feverishly on a more climate-friendly building sector. Heat plans are being drawn up everywhere, and almost every municipal utility is investing in renewable energy production. A mammoth project: 48 percent of CO2 emissions in Germany arise from heat production for private houses, apartments and factories. And the building sector should be climate neutral by 2045. Large cities must have submitted a heat plan by mid-2026, small towns and communities not until 2028.
