The development studio Tequila Worksbased in Madrid, announced the cancellation of an unannounced gamewhich led to several layoffs.
Known for well-regarded indie games like Deadlight, The Sexy Brutale, and Rime, Tequila Works has made several notable collaborations, such as the horror game Gylt for the defunct cloud gaming platform Google Stadia and Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story for Riot Games . Evidently it has not had much success in the last period, also thanks to the traditional market which has become particularly difficult.
A difficult situation
After all, Tequila Works it is not the first software house to make layoffs in the last two yearsand it actually follows a long trail of lost jobs and eliminated teams, with larger companies like Sony and Microsoft sending thousands of people home.
Tequila Works’ layoffs come as part of the studio’s restructuring, which of its own will focus on developing a single game. The number of those fired was not disclosed. Before Tencent’s investment, which took place in 2022, there was talk of 160 employees, which certainly grew after the liquidity injection.
From what we understand, Tequila Works was working on two games, before one was cancelled. Nothing is known about the latter, just as nothing is known about the first.
The hope is that those who have lost their jobs will soon find a new job. Unfortunately, many fired developers are often forced to change environmentas the video game industry has become too unstable to provide a future for many people.
