A well-known innkeeper in Venice no longer wants to accept that his guests get wet because of strong waves. He goes into battle against the city.
Venice – In one of the most romantic cities in the world, too strong waves cause displeasure. This time, however, it’s not about the new entrance fee for day tourists, but about a much more everyday problem: tourists who want to enjoy their drinks in the dry. Due to the strong waves that regularly wet guests’ feet, a restaurant owner has now taken legal action.
Famous bar in Venice: Former guests like Hemingway and Hepburn
Arrigo Cipriani, the operator of the legendary “Harry’s Bar”, which has hosted celebrities such as Ernest Hemingway, Orson Welles and Katherine Hepburn, is angry with the city administration. According to a report by the Corriere della Sera The 92-year-old Cipriani has filed a lawsuit against the city of Venice and the port authority through his lawyer. The focus is on his restaurant “Harry’s Dolci”, which is located directly on the Giudecca Canal. Here, boats passing at excessive speed regularly cause waves that reach onto the terrace and towards the guests.
Application for wave protection rejected – Venice cites monument protection
Cipriani had asked the authorities to build a protective structure against the waves. However, this application was rejected with reference to monument protection. The bar owner then lost patience and decided to sue. Cipriani, whose father founded Harry’s Bar, isn’t the only one to complain. According to Corriere, there are numerous organizations and citizens who have been calling for measures to curb the wave movements for years.
Too high speed on Venice canals: no legal recourse
As the newspaper further reports, there is currently no legal means to effectively punish boats speeding on the canals. A corresponding law has stalled in the Senate. Meanwhile, the waves have become an increasingly bigger problem. This makes it almost impossible for rowers to row in certain areas of the canal.
A celebrity innkeeper from Austria also recently expressed his frustration with the bureaucracy in Venice and expressed his opinion in clear terms. (construction)
