Szijjártó: Hungary will not be affected by the stop of gas transit through Ukraine
Hungary will not be affected by a possible stop in gas transit from Russia through Ukraine. Supplies mainly go through the Turkish Stream, Budapest is ready to provide assistance to other European countries that will be more affected by the transit stop, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said at a press conference broadcast on Facebook (social network banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is banned).
“As for the transit of gas through Ukraine, which, in all likelihood, will be stopped, this does not concern us,” he clarified.
According to Szijjártó, Hungary receives the bulk of Russian gas through Turkish Stream, thanks to which “the country’s energy supply is now secure.” The minister also noted that Hungary has invested a lot in gas infrastructure in recent years.
In September, Szijjártó also said that maintaining the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine in 2025 is no longer so important for Hungary, since the country can receive fuel through the Turkish Stream gas pipeline.
Previously, Associate Professor of the Department of Informatics of the Russian University of Economics named after G.V. Plekhanov Alexander Timofeev said that European countries would be at a disadvantage if they refused gas transit through Ukraine. According to him, without this transit, prices could soar to $600-650 per 1,000 cubic meters.
