Woodward also reports that Trump was in close contact with Putin during his time in office. The tests were probably intended for Putin personally. According to reports, the Russian leader was worried about possible infection, especially in the early days of the pandemic. This was also evident, among other things, in the fact that before the start of the war in Ukraine, he received his state guests – including Chancellor Olaf Scholz – at an unusually long table in order to be able to maintain the necessary distance.
However, Woodward writes, Putin recommended that Trump not speak publicly about the exchange. “I don’t want them to tell anyone because people will be angry with them and not with me,” Putin reportedly told Trump, according to Woodward’s research.
Close race with Harris – book publication weighs on Trump ahead of the 2024 US election
The publication of the book almost four weeks before the 2024 US election could further influence Trump’s election campaign. In national election polls, Trump is trailing his rival Kamala Harris – be decided US elections usually take place in the contested swing states.
