RF GP: Latvia, Canada and Switzerland refused to cooperate due to politics
Three countries refused legal cooperation with Russia for political reasons in 2024. Lenta.ru was informed about this by the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia.
The competent authorities of Latvia, Canada and Switzerland rejected the Russian side’s requests for legal assistance. The Swiss Federal Office of Justice accompanied its decision with the signature “No legal assistance can be provided to the Russian Federation” in a request from the Prosecutor General’s Office for legal assistance in a criminal case of fraud.
The Russian department reported that foreign states refused to fulfill 27 requests.
Requests for the extradition of Russian citizens accused of committing crimes were also rejected. Of the 67 Russian requests, 14 refusals by the competent authorities of Austria, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland and the Czech Republic were motivated by politics. For 19 requests, foreign states did not indicate the reasons for refusals at all.
At the same time, a number of countries continue to cooperate with Russia in the fight against crime, the Prosecutor General’s Office noted. In eight months, 120 accused were extradited, and the competent authorities of Montenegro, Serbia, the United Arab Emirates, and Greece fulfilled 283 Russian requests for legal assistance in criminal cases.
On August 31, it was reported that Venezuela handed over to Russia Colombians who fought on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU).
