The caravan of the World Rally-Raid Championship is in mourning after the accident in which Frédéric Baudry lost his life. The Frenchman was participating for the second time in the Morocco Rally and during the first stage of the African race, in a ring around the city of Zagora, he suffered a fall in the dunes at km 97.
Although he promptly received medical attention and was flown by helicopter to the nearest hospital, he died at 4.45pm local time. The organizers did everything possible to avoid the tragedy, but the Frenchman was unable to survive the injuries sustained after the impact and the race officials released a statement expressing their “sincere condolences to the family and friends”.
This is a tragic episode in one of the preparatory events for the Dakar Rally, which saw another fatal accident occur in the last edition, when Carles Falcón lost his life after a fall during the second stage in Saudi Arabia.
The director of both races, David Castera, always tries to improve safety and in the case of two wheels, where the riders are more vulnerable, he places a lot of emphasis, even if it is impossible to reduce the possibility of such a thing to zero.
The Frenchman said that Frédéric Baudry fell on a dune where he was not going too fast, but unfortunately he was already unconscious when medical help arrived on the scene. As for the race, it was the representative of Nomade Racing Assistance, riding the KTM #96.
