Schröder’s politically highly talented foster son Sigmar Gabriel, who as SPD chairman often surprised the party with erratic solo moves, proved to be mixed and not always a stroke of luck – not always pleasantly.
After the surprising resignation of the also highly talented Kevin Kühnert as general secretary, Matthias Miersch from Lower Saxony is now set to take over what is probably the most thankless post that the current 17 percent party has to offer a year before the federal election.
It’s nice for him that SPD leader Lars Klingbeil is also from Lower Saxony, who knows the Willy Brandt House, which is not easy to manage, and gets along well with Miersch. As a politician in the front row, the calm-looking party leftist and parliamentary group deputy Miersch is still a red box for the public. Kühnert, on the other hand, was already in the spotlight as a quick-witted Juso boss.
However, one thing can already be predicted: With SPD Realo Klingbeil as leader, who aims at the center and is primarily concerned with the strategy of the federal election campaign, there is unlikely to be a left-wing turn to the left, unlike the sister party SPÖ, which is unsuccessful in Austria – Saskia Esken or not here. This did not exist during the term of office of the former party rebel and GroKo opponent Kühnert. On the contrary: During Scholz’s previous chancellorship, Kühnert became a good party officer as general secretary, who apparently also suffered damage to his health in this role. A tragic role in which his former charisma evaporated, especially for younger people. It remains to be seen how much Miersch will have to bend.
