Eric Schmidtformer CEO of Google, has expressed a controversial view on the future of the climate and the role of artificial intelligence. During the AI+ Energy summit in Washington DC, Schmidt stated that humanity will not be able to achieve climate goals due to a lack of global coordination. According to him, the only hope lies in artificial intelligence, which should be used to optimize energy systems, improve efficiency and accelerate the development of clean technologies.
Schmidt emphasized theimportance of data centers for the development of AIhighlighting how their geographic location is becoming a matter of national security. He also predicted that the Arab world will become a key hub for training European AI, thanks to low energy costs.
However, Schmidt’s statements have raised several criticisms. Many have pointed out that his think tank, Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), is focused on US competitiveness in the age of AI, suggesting a possible conflict of interest. Furthermore, his “techno-solutionist” vision, which entrusts AI with solving the climate problem, ignores the complex geopolitical and social dynamics that contribute to climate change.
Despite the criticism, Schmidt’s words have sparked debate about the role of AI in fighting climate change. It is undeniable that AI can offer innovative solutions to reduce emissions and develop clean technologies, but it is equally important to address the ethical and social challenges associated with its use. Also because at the moment using AI really consumes a lot of energy.
