She passed away at the age of 91 Cissy Houston, legendary gospel singer and mother of the famous Whitney Houston. She was also Bobbi Kristina’s grandmother. Cissy passed away Monday morning at her home in New Jersey, surrounded by her loved ones. He had been under palliative care for some time due to Alzheimer’s disease, his daughter-in-law Pat Houston told TMZ.
Cissy Houston lived a life marked by great artistic successes but also by profound family tragedies. He lost both to his daughter Whitney than to his niece Bobbi Kristinaboth of whom passed away in tragic circumstances. His cry of pain for his granddaughter is unforgettable, anticipating the worst with a phrase that has remained alive in the memories of many: “He’s not making any progress.”
Born in 1933, Cissy Houston has left an indelible mark on music. He won two Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album for his work Face to Face (1997) e He Leadeth Me (1998). Her career began at a very young age, in 1938, when she sang gospel with her brothers, but it was as a backing vocalist that Cissy shone for decades. He has collaborated with some of music’s biggest stars: Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan and many others. Her powerful voice has also enriched the works of musical icons such as Paul Simon, Luther Vandross and Beyoncé, making her one of the most sought-after voices of her generation.
His life, however, was not just an artistic success. In the book Remembering WhitneyCissy recounted the family drama that engulfed her daughter Whitney. Her words revealed how her life was undermined by drug addiction and an abusive relationship with Bobby Brown. Courageously, Cissy also said that the alleged accident that scarred Whitney’s face was actually caused by Bobby’s fury. In a moment of anger the man broke a plate, injuring the singer. The pain of her daughter’s descent into the abyss of addiction was devastating for Cissy.
“Drugs? I thought they were just rumors, but I once visited her in her house in Atlanta and found all the walls and doors with strange drawings, even a portrait with her image had been cut out. I called the police and had her taken to hospital, she got very angry, but a few years later she thanked me. She told me I saved her life.”
Despite desperate attempts to save her, Whitney died in 2012, followed tragically by Bobbi Kristina in 2015.
Cissy Houston will be remembered as a woman of great faith, strength and determination, who faced with dignity not only the successes, but also the tragedies of her life. His musical and human legacy will continue to live on through his songs.
