The sale of Andretti Global
That Michael Andretti is no longer the great leader of the “family” team is now well known. In recent days the American manager and former driver has in fact sold the controlling share of Andretti Global to partner Dan Towriss. A surprise step backwards that comes a few months after the – for the moment irrevocable – denial by Liberty Media to access as the eleventh team in Formula 1 with the support of General Motors and the Cadillac brand, which would have supplied the power units to starting from 2028. Perhaps this is also why the son of motorsport legend Mario Andretti felt the need to explain his reasons in an open letter published on the team’s official website.
Michael Andretti’s letter
“Over the last twenty years – we read in Michael Andretti’s note – our team has seen ups and downs. We have grown to a global level that I believe has not yet been achieved in the racing world and have seen some of the best talent proudly wear the Andretti badge. Many of my fondest memories have come behind the wheel of this organization and I am very proud of what we have built. But decades of flat-out racing are not without sacrifices and, after thinking and reflecting on it a lot over the last few months, I have decided to take a step back. I had a daily operational role even before I got out of the race car, ed The time has come to pass the baton to my partner and friend Dan Towriss”.
“I make this decision for myself – he concluded – for my family and for the team, and I know it’s a shock to many. But I won’t leave: I will be a consultant for the team and will be available to help whenever I can. Even though you will see me less on the track, know that my passion for this sport and my support for our team and its people will remain unwavering. My hope is that Andretti fans will continue to support the team with the same enthusiasm and loyalty they have shown my family over the years. I’m excited to spend more time with my beautiful family, including my 10-year-old twins, to embrace my new title as a grandfather, and to explore new things personally and with my other activities. This isn’t goodbye, it’s just moving on”.
