Yucatan, Mexico.- Activities in the Yucatan Peninsula are paralyzed due to the threat posed to various locations by Category 5 Hurricane “Miltón”, the maximum on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Since 1:30 p.m. this Monday, Yucatán has been on red alert and non-essential activities were suspended until tomorrow, with the exception of essential services such as hospitals, supermarkets, pharmacies and gas stations. Public transport was suspended until 5:00 p.m., and dry law was declared at the same time.
Morenoist Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena also reported that the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) suspended its operations from 3:00 p.m. In the latest report from the National Meteorological Service (SMN), from the National Water Commission (Conagua), at 3:00 p.m. the center of “Milton” was 110 kilometers north-northwest of Celestún and 125 kilometers west -northwest of Progreso, both towns in Yucatán, with maximum sustained winds of 285 kilometers per hour, gusts of 350 kilometers and movement towards the east at 17 kilometers per hour.
“It is expected that, due to the cone of uncertainty and low pressure over Yucatán, during this Monday night and early Tuesday morning, the center of the hurricane will impact between Celestún and Progreso, Yucatán,” the forecast indicates.
Its wide circulation, he points out, will maintain the forecast of occasional torrential rains in Campeche and Yucatán, intense in Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Veracruz; as well as gusts of wind of 180 to 200 kilometers per hour, waves of 6 to 8 meters high and possible formation of waterspouts on the northern coasts of Campeche and Yucatán. The Yucatecan President is supervising the evacuation work and transfer to the temporary shelters installed in the State, as reported on social networks. “This hurricane is going to pass very close to the ports of Yucatan, here they just told me that it is moving at 15 kilometers per hour, it has winds of 280 kilometers per hour with gusts of 305 kilometers per hour, therefore, those of us who are of port, we have to take precautions because yes or yes there will be a flood because it will pass through the sea,” he warned through a recording together with residents in Sisal, who were preparing to move to a shelter. “We expect it to (pass) more than 50 kilometers away from the Yucatecan coast, but it could get closer at some point,” he added. Since noon, the port of Progreso was already empty while the tenants were protecting the businesses with wooden boards and even sandbags to prevent the detachment of sheets and flooding. In Quintana Roo, Morenoist Governor Mara Lezama announced the suspension of classes in all schools, public and private, at all levels, in Benito Juárez, Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and Puerto Morelos, which are on orange alert , that is, in high danger. The President asked the population not to make purchases beyond what was essential, and assured that the supply of food and cleaning products in the northern area of the entity is confirmed. At the Cancun Airport, the cancellations of at least four arriving and four departing flights were reported, while hundreds of tourists and visitors fled the island of Holbox before “Milton.” Meanwhile, in Campeche, classes at all educational levels and commercial flights were also suspended at the Ingeniero Alberto Acuña Ongay Airport, although the facility will remain open and in operation to handle emergency or operational flights. The towns that are on orange alert are Calkiní, Dzitbalché, Hecelchakán and Tenabo, while Campeche, Seybaplaya, Champotón, Hopelchén and Calakmul are on yellow alert or in moderate danger. Escárceaga, Candelaria, Carmen and Palizada are on green alert.
