The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported in 2023 the seizure of 1,821 weapons in Chihuahua, a figure that placed the state as the fourth entity with the highest number of registrations nationwide.
According to the results obtained by the National Census of State and Federal Justice Prosecution 2024 of the Inegi, of the total number of weapons seized, 715 were long weapons, 1,084 were short, 20 were handmade and two were classified as “unidentified.” In Baja California, Guanajuato and Nuevo León, the highest number of seized firearms was reported, with 2,637, 2,472 and 2,092, respectively. These three entities concentrated 25.5 percent of the national total. At the national level, in 2023, the FGR reported the seizure of one million 417 thousand 622 commonly used ammunition (cartridges) and 28 thousand 280 firearms. Of the latter, 52.8 percent corresponded to short weapons; 38.3 percent were long weapons and 8.4 percent were handmade. Compared to 2022, the number of firearms seized in the country by the FGR increased by 21 percent, indicates the official survey. The municipality of Chihuahua with the most seizures is Juárez, with 227 weapons; There were also seizures in Ahumada, Ascensión, Batopilas, Bocoyna, Camargo, Chihuahua, Cuauhtémoc, Cusihuiriachi, Guachochi, Guadalupe y Calvo, Parral, Jiménez, Madera, Nuevo Casas Grandes, Ojinaga, Urique, Uruachi, López and Matamoros. The Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) reported that of the total seizures it managed to identify the origin of 126 weapons in companies in 10 countries, led by the United States, where 81 weapons manufactured by 30 companies come from. Austria follows with 11 Glock brand weapons and Germany with eight from the companies Heckler & Koch, Luger, Sig Sauer and Carl Walther GMBH Sportwaffen. Other countries that produce the weapons seized in Mexico are: China, with seven from the Norinco company; Italy with six weapons of the Pietro Beretta, Pietro Beretta Panther and Benelli Armi SPA brands; Brazil with six from the Taurus International company, and Romania, which has four from the Compania Nationala Romarm gunsmith. Japan completes the list with a weapon from the Vanguard company; Argentina with one from the Bersa Piccola company and Serbia with one from Zastava Arms. There are two other weapons of the brands called Monroe and Wardsh, whose origin is unknown. The rest of the weapons, 362 pieces, have no mark or denomination that would allow their origin to be traced; Furthermore, in many cases it was not possible to locate the serial numbers because they were deleted or altered.
