Berlin – In the end, things went faster than expected. Only on Monday afternoon did the SPD general secretary Kevin Kühnert announced in a letter to his party colleagues that he would resign from his position for health reasons. As of Monday evening, the question of his successor appears to have already been clarified. While the SPD executive board met digitally, the name of the designated successor was already leaked out through various channels: the Social Democrats are going into the 2025 federal election year with Matthias Miersch. Miersch belongs to the left wing of the SPD and comes from Lower Saxony. The 55-year-old is an experienced politician and strategist and has been a member of the Bundestag since 2005. He is currently part of the leadership of the Parliamentary Left in the SPD.
The lawyer has been deputy parliamentary group leader since 2021. In this role, Miersch is responsible for the environment, climate protection, energy, agriculture and consumer protection – subject areas in which the SPD expects a tough battle in the election campaign with the Union.

According to his own statements, Miersch joined the SPD when he was 21. On his personal website, he justifies the decision by saying that the SPD “with its tradition and policies in German history stands for the basic values of solidarity, equal opportunities and social justice like no other party in German history.” Miersch lives with his partner in a registered civil partnership in Hanover and sits in the German Parliament for the Hannover-Land II constituency.
The 55-year-old is considered a staunch advocate Energy transitioni.e. the gradual exit from fossil fuels. For example, he also played a leading role in negotiating the controversial heating law with the Greens and the FDP. Miersch recently declared that he wanted to run for the Bundestag again.

According to information from the dpa, Miersch is to take over the office of Secretary General with immediate effect – initially on an acting basis. An SPD party conference must then officially confirm the 55-year-old in office.
About a year before Federal election loses it SPD with Kühnert is probably their most important election campaign manager. It initially remained unclear whether Miersch should take on this task fully or whether party leader Klingbeil, who already has experience, would step in. (dpa/fd)
