During fiscal year (FY) 2024, United States Border Patrol agents discovered a total of 24 cases of human smuggling in which 387 migrants were hidden aboard cargo transport trucks in the El Paso Sector.
Despite the new measures of the United States Government to withdraw the visa from transporters who are detained with irregular migrants, over the weekend the immigration authority announced two new cases. In the first case, Border Patrol agents dismantled a smuggling scheme in Lordsburg, New Mexico, and detained 19 migrants traveling in a tractor-trailer. According to the images shared by the US Government, 16 of the people were men and three women, and all were detained under Title 8, which represents expulsion from the country. In the second case reported, agents from the Anti-Smuggling Unit assigned to the Santa Teresa Station discovered 17 migrants hidden in a truck with a trailer, so the head of the Border Patrol in the El Paso Sector, Anthony ‘Scott’ Good, highlighted the success in stopping the smuggling operation. “Firm in their commitment, the agents of the El Paso Sector remain vigilant!” said the border agent. In February, Joe Biden’s government announced a new policy of withdrawing the visa from transporters who are detained with irregular migrants. Through article 212(a)(3)(C), since February 21, the United States Government has restricted visas to owners, executives and workers of air, land and maritime transportation companies that provide services to people with the intention of migrating irregularly to the United States. Until then, there were four trailers or semi-trailers discovered in which people were transported without the necessary documents to remain in the United States. Since then, agents tasked with monitoring the border outside official ports of entry have located 20 more trucks. During the first 11 months of fiscal year (FY) 2024 – from October 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024 – the El Paso Sector accumulated 243,618 encounters of irregular migrants at the border, 37.4 percent less than the 389,000 323 registered in the same period of FY 2023 –from October 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023–. According to official statistics, FY 2024 began in October of last year with 22,106 encounters of people at the border and continued in November with 22,408, while December recorded 33,966 arrests, January 17,514, February 23,000. 918, March 30,422, April 30,397, May 23,478, June 14,513, July 11,614 and August 13,282.
