Editorial|Several international organizations have been speculated to win the Nobel Peace Prize, which will be announced on Friday.
Tthis year’s round of Nobel prizes started on Monday with the announcement of the prize for medicine. It is given to two US molecular biologists, Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun. Ambros and Ruvkun, who studied the development of cell types, discovered micro-rna, which plays a role in gene regulation of the human DNA strand.
The Nobel week continues with the announcements of the natural sciences awards: on Tuesday it’s the turn of the physics Nobel and on Wednesday the chemistry Nobel. On Thursday in Stockholm, the recipient of this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature will be revealed. The recipient of the Peace Prize will be announced in Oslo on Friday. Next week, the economics prize in memory of Alfred Nobel will be awarded.
The awards are evaluated both from the point of view of scientific achievements and socio-political criteria, for example from the point of view of equality. Only less than seven percent of Nobel laureates have been women. The gender distribution is important to the extent that the list of Nobel laureates gives a distorted picture of science and scientists.
A year ago, seven men and four women were awarded the Nobel Prizes. One of the women was Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist who received the Peace Prize.
Nobel week also includes betting on the prize winners. The prize is decided by a five-member committee, which sends political messages with the prize but tries to avoid the very direct politicization of the peace prize.
This year, among others, the European Security and Cooperation Organization’s ODIHR election observation organization, the International Court of Justice ICJ, the UN aid organization for Palestinian refugees UNRWA and the UN educational, scientific and cultural organization Unesco have been speculated to be the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
