Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this Monday (7) at a special government meeting, on the anniversary of the Hamas attacks, that Israel is immersed in a “resurrection war to ensure that October 7th does not happen again.”
“Since that day we have been under attack on seven fronts,” said the president about the attack, in which around 1,200 people died and another 251 were kidnapped.
On October 8, the Shia militia Hezbollah began attacking northern Israel from Lebanon in support of Hamas. Gradually, Yemen’s Houthis, Iraq’s Islamic resistance, Syria’s pro-Iranian militias and, on two occasions, Iran, launched attacks against Israel.
Adding the Palestinian militias in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza, they all add up to the seven fronts that Netanyahu refers to. In the West Bank, specifically, there has been an escalation of violence and Israeli attacks, which have left more than 400 Palestinians dead.
Netanyahu reaffirmed that Israel will only end the war when it completes its objectives: ending Hamas, returning displaced Israelis to their homes – more than 60,000 in the north and around 15,000 in the south -, recovering the 97 hostages still in Gaza and ” thwart any future threat” to the country.
In addition, the prime minister participated this Monday in an act in honor of those killed in the city of Jerusalem in the attack, where he said that the Israelis rose up like “a nation of wolves” in response.
In total, 87 citizens of Jerusalem died in the attacks, according to the president’s office, without specifying how many were military personnel and how many were civilians.
“Our heroes fell in defense of the homeland. We went through a terrible massacre a year ago and we rose up as a people, like lions,” he said during the event, held at a monument in honor of those killed in Jerusalem.
“We are changing reality in our region,” he said, a mantra he has repeated since Israel launched its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also stated that today, more than ever, the country maintains “a deep commitment to continue taking the necessary measures” to defend Israel.
Gallant also insisted on the national duty to recover the hostages, as well as to support the wounded “body and soul”, remember the dead and continue the fight.
