The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) launched this Monday, 7th, the 2nd Cycle of BNDES Periferias. The first cycle of the program already totals R$82 million in resources to finance initiatives that will be contracted soon. An additional R$100 million was offered in a new open public call to receive more proposals.
The first cycle, launched on March 24, included R$50 million from BNDES and another R$50 million from partners, which resulted in R$82 million to be contracted in the selected projects.
According to Tereza Campello, Socio-Environmental Director at BNDES, the bank is receiving the 12 selected for workshops, then moving on to contracting the resources.
“In the first stage we received 81 proposals that were able to participate. There was a record demand for proposals”, said the director.
For the new cycle, announced this Monday, another R$100 million will be available, again R$50 million from BNDES and R$50 million from partners.
The development bank also announced the approval of a R$65 million operation with the telecommunications infrastructure company Highline, which aims to install 181 high-speed internet towers, 4G and 5G, in 23 states.
“Most of the resources will be allocated to the implementation of 145 telecommunications towers to serve 124 favelas spread across the country and in eight rural locations in Bahia, Maranhão and Piauí, locations selected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger (MDS). The remaining towers will serve another 28 rural or urban territories”, informed the BNDES.
BNDES has already accessed R$2 billion from the Telecommunications Services Universalization Fund (Fust), to finance initiatives linked to connectivity and telecommunications in the country.
According to José Luis Gordon, director of Productive Development, Innovation and Foreign Trade, approximately R$740 million has already been contracted in different projects.
“The rest are in the hiring phase for next year,” Gordon said.
