After a ruler-shaped keyboard, Google has returned to the limelight with a new physical version of Gboard with an even more unusual design: a spiral with keys on both sides. The idea, born from the sacrosanct observation that traditional keyboards only have keys on one side, was to create a keyboard that could also be used upside down.
A concept which, although presented with a joking tone, hides a reflection on the functionality and ergonomics of input tools. And the concept obviously came from Google Japan, a division of the American giant that is no stranger to surprises of this type.
The spiral keyboard, which as you can see at the moment is only a prototype, was created with the aim of “solving the big problem” of the impossibility of using an upside-down keyboard. Google Japan, with its usual irony, published a photo showing the keyboard upside down, accompanied by the caption: “If you turn a classic keyboard upside down you can no longer work. This doesn’t happen with the new Gboard”.
Despite the joking tone, Google Japan’s initiative has a dual purpose: to raise awareness of the Gboard virtual keyboard and to entertain the public. The company also announced that it plans to explore new designs in the future, such as a single-row hoop version, a waterproof one, and a double helix version.
Unfortunately, however, the spiral Gboard keyboard is not for sale. However, Google has published the code on Github, allowing anyone to build it. For the less experienced, however, a template is also available to create a paper version of the keyboard. And who knows, at this point an exceptional collaboration with Nintendo will be set up for the new version of Nintendo Labo cardboard peripherals.
And what do you think? Would you like to try a keyboard like this, perhaps for a good game of Call of Duty or Fortnite? Tell us your opinion in the comments below, but write strictly with the keyboard upside down.
