The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, has announced Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.
Last year, the award was won by Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for the messenger RNA-based Covid vaccine.
Among this year’s favorites are Jonathan C. Cohen and Helen H. Hobbs for their research on the genetics of lipid metabolism, according to the predictions of the American consulting firm Clarivate.
The award is worth 11 million Swedish crowns, about 950,000 euros. This award opens the round of announcements this week, which will continue on Tuesday with the Physics award, on Wednesday with the Chemistry award, on Thursday with the Literature award, and on Friday with the Peace award.
Since 1901, a total of 227 people have received this award. Only 13 of them are women.
